School Children

Photographs of classes of schoolchildren are still popular today and the earliest in this collection is about 1890.

The first children wearing school uniforms are shown in pictures of Liverpool Girls College in 1915. Can you imagine playing in the elaborate dresses worn by the girls in the pictures of St.Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic School? Compare these with the clothes which the children of Banks Road County Primary School are wearing in 1999.

In 1869 a photographer asked if he could take photographs of groups of children at Pleasant Street School. Parents could then buy copies of the pictures for 6d (21/2p) each, although many parents would probably not have been able to afford this.

352EDU1/78/3 "A photographer applied for permission to take the likenesses of the children in groups for which he proposes to charge 6d each to those who may wish to purchase them, and presenting each teacher with a copy. He has taken the children in three schools accordingly."
