The origins of Bromborough Pool village

Price's Patent Candle Company, which had factories in London, needed to be nearer the port where the raw materials used for making candles came into the country from overseas. This port was Liverpool and the company decided to build a factory on the Wirral on the opposite banks of the River Mersey. Because the Wilson family which founded the company wanted to make sure that its employees were looked after properly, it also decided to build a village where the factory was to be located, at Bromborough Pool.

The site at Bromborough gave the company the chance to build houses for the workers and provide various amenities. It was also an opportunity for Prices to have more space than was available in London. For the workers who moved from London to the wide open spaces of Bromborough it was a chance to have clean air away from the pollution of the city. The site was also well placed for road, rail and sea links.

The land is bought to build the village
Bromborough Pool was the second oldest ‘industrial’ village in the United Kingdom (the first was Saltaire near Bradford in Yorkshire in 1850). The Wilson’s bought 42a. of land which formerly part of the Court House Farm at Bromborough. An extra 19a. of land was then required and on 22 August 1853 the final agreement was signed with the seller of the land and Price’s paid £12,267 10s (the equivalent of about £670,000 today.
